Poison With the Invitations

Interesting thread on Ed Cone's (who else?) site about Elizabeth Edwards coming to Converge South... it is a good illustration of the dark side of the Greensboro blogging community.

I started the thread with an honest and respectful question- and received respectful answers from Ed, Fec, even Elizabeth Edwards- and others.

But there were others- Sue, Billy, Greendog, Ruby- who reminded me why I don't look forward to meet ups and things like Converge South. Ruby, for example, called some of us with questions "trolls." Greendog, a cowardly soul who chooses to insult while hiding behind his anonymous moniker, urges those of us with doubts to stay away. And then there's the ever prominant Greensboro bloggers Sue and Billy going out of their way to insult anyone they disagree with. If this is how Greensboro bloggers try to make people feel welcome to an event like Coverge South...

As insults go, this thread is mild by their standards, but the point is there was no cause to be disrespectful at all. I acknowleged that landing Mrs. Edwards was significant, but Ed is absolutely starstruck with John Edwards- and- this blogging community is overhelmingly political and liberal to boot. Like Sam, I'll go listen to most national figures, but I still wonder what she has to do with blogging. It is a fair question.

I've learned to live with the Greensboro style of debate on blog sites. I've learned alot from folks that I disagree with, and I have made a few friends. I blog because I want to write. Some of you are trying to make a living from writing- something that is very difficult to do. I respect that. But why be with people who don't respect you, insult you and make no effort to hide their disdain for you? That's what politicians do, not bloggers.

Comments:
Chip --

Your exact words are "tell 'em I'm coming!...And Hell's coming with me!"

Exactly what kind of response were you expecting that to evoke?

Was it insulting? No- I was putting all the crap behind me- but it occurred to me that I was not upset about politics, I just don't like to be around people who like to insult people. I may yet come, but it will be hard.

"Was it insulting?" "I was putting all that crap behind me..."

Putting behind you effective when? This is recent rhetoric. There's no "behind" here.

Explain to me how saying "tell 'em I'm coming!...And Hell's coming with me!" -- is positive or not insulting.

If you want to come, register and come. If you don't want to come, for whatever reason, then don't come.

And if I'm unable to hide my "disdain" for you it's not because of what you believe, some of which I agree with and some of which I don't, or whether you're a republican or a conservative, but because you say things like "kick his ass," and then get all high and mighty and insulted when someone says it back.

Chip was trying to pull a Fecund Stench. Unfortunately, just FYI Chip... because you don't usually write that way, it doesn't come off the same way to others as I read it since I know you a bit better now.

What's interesting is that as a conference organizer for the last two years and one of the people that dreamed up the idea in the first place, I don't appreciate you turning this into a political roundabout.

The idea behind the conference had nothing to do with politics. It was about freedom of speech and how we interact with community through technology. If I'm not mistaken, I even extended an invitation last year to Marcus, which was turned down because of the same "political" attitudes.

If you have any doubts, ask Sam Wharton. It wasn't even about politics, and nor will it ever be. Yes, there are liberal political bloggers or such invited. But believe me, I tried to extend the same invitation to conservatives as did the other organizers. Instapundit had a family emergency, so didn't make it last year but was the only one that even wanted to come. Everyone else pulled the same "political" attitude about how this was a Democrat/liberal thing.

I'm really kind of sick of all this. I for one am a technology advocate. I really don't give a flying *!@# about all of your political agendas. I wanted ConvergeSouth to eventually be like SXSW. Obviously with this politically charged atmosphere, this reminds me why the South has always been technologically behind in every stupid little thing we do. If not, prove me wrong because I'm kind of pissed right now that you and Dr. Mary Johnson and some others are poo-pooing it just because of Elizabeth Edwards. I don't see you helping with trying to find people willing to speak for "FREE".

It's funny, but I actually find you in-person a quiet, but well-spoken individual. You actually come off very much like Joel in person. But when you send mixed messages (like your Hell is coming with me quote), people don't know what to think. I found it actually very funny. But because your style doesn't usually flow that way like Fecund's, others misinterpreted. Just making sure you know where this is going.

Right about now, I sort of wish you were on AIM. bleh.

You are too generous, DM. Put the "hell's coming with me," next to "kick his ass," and you've got a pattern of behavior.

You type fast- I can't type slow. I did not bring politics into it. Ed got a political figure to come- I ASKED what this had to do with blogging. Then all hell broke loose.

I'm with you- but if me or Dr Mary get blasted for voicing concern over a political figure... and JW - leave it alone- I didn't insult anyone or make it political.

A pattern of behavior is you intentionally taking words out of context...

How did I take the words out of context? I'm referring to the things you said. Did you not say in response to discussion about Elizabeth Edward's appearance at Converge, "Tell them I'm coming and Hell's coming with me?"

And leave what alone? I found your remarks to be insulting. You said they weren't and so I'm not allowed to say anymore about it.

I said I'd come- thanks. I understand its not political- and I'll look forward to meeting Elizabeth Edwards. I'm just fed up with leading bloggers tolerating real trolls, piling on and insulting people. It is mean and wrong. I don't even mind when debates get heated...

bottom line- the first rule in building a community of bloggers is encouragement.

JW- let me blunt - when I quoted "Hells coming with me" you recognized it as a quote and asked where it was from. I answered- Tombstone- I know you like to argue- so do I- but lets go at it over something else. I'll see if I can really stir things up- though Ed is the master of great threads.

I agree with the encouragement which is why you don't find me threatening to "kick his ass," or bring hell with me.

And I shall leave it alone now.

DM- As you may be aware- I have 2 fairly prominant political family members- a Fed Judge and a b-i-l who ran for Gov in SC. The latter is a family doc as well- I'll bet it would be interesting to hear how he used the net and blogging on the campaign and in medicine.

PS- Both went to Clemson- point guard Bob Conrad- class of '80 and Oscar Lovelace- president of student body '82.

I've re-read that thread a couple times, trying for different perspectives.

UNFORTUNATELY, it was pretty blatant that you voiced the concern and Dr. Mary brought up politics.

Ed answered your question right off in the fourth comment.

About the tenth comment down, Dr. Mary basically goes off on her own agenda how the One America site is blah blah blah, and it snowballed from there.

Technically speaking, you could have left it at that, since it's pretty obvious Ed answered your question very directly without much for interpretation. "It's not a political conference, and hers is not a political session."

You then backed Dr. Mary with "I looked over her site- the Doctor is absolutely right. As for community, I don't feel welcome." THAT is where you started the political side even if you didn't mean it. Dr. Mary's little speech was a charged piece.

Either way, I'm still really peeved about it since I usually play back-fiddle and make sure things go well, in this case for the community since we're trying to get people to come into town and see and talk to these people. Like the Scobles, who are A-listers (http://www.blogebrity.com/thelist/). None of this is about politics. In fact, Scoble is here to talk about the other ways to use technology to get your voice out.

Either way, I hope you come and maybe be able to note that this wasn't about politics. Hell, the meetups aren't although it runs as a conversation piece sometimes. In any case, I'm going to quit yapping before I blow a fuse.

Oh, and before I forget, the reason you're targeted by liberal bloggers is because you target them (like I said before, passive aggressive). Since the conversations you have are more or less political, most people take it as such. I hope that you see that ConvergeSouth wasn't created as such nor will it be as such as long as I'm sitting on the steering committee.

On your family members.... PLEASE. bring it up again with me when this year's CS is over and we're starting to plan for the next one.

I'm all for new speakers next year, and if you want to provide conservative speakers to talk technology, I'm all for it.

I'm still trying to swallow my rage at all of this due to that thread on Ed's site.

One of the problems with blogging is that often our choice of words when written does not express fully our thoughts. One huge difference between the written word (especially hastily written comments) and a live conversation is facial expressions, tone of voice, and other cues that tell emotion and thoughts. I have this problem at work with conference calls and email. Because of that I choose my written and phone words very carefully. What one writes as a joke, when spoken in person, with a smile or giggle, is noticed as a joke. Absent those cues, that same comment may be offensive.

But your basic idea Chip, that having EE at CS wouldn't draw you, could equally be applied to Malkin, and these days wonkette isn't Ana Marie Cox anymore. One benefit of blogs should be that people with all different viewpoints should get together. One bad thing I've found is that controversial topics degrade to insults or laughable arguments. If expect a liberal to want to attend a conference with Malkin (who I myself find very nasty and objectionable), can't they expect you to tolerate EE? If you'd like more conservative views - the better person to ask for would be instapundit, as he was big into the TN bloggers conference a while back. I would guess, though, that Ed has already asked him, and the date may not be the best. That has been a bad weekend for me the past 2 years and why I haven't attended.

http://instapundit.com/archives/031941.php

Instapundit's "coverage"

I agree- Malkin is tough- but I did mean to balance her with Wonkette. I do appreciate the way national bloggers read and promote each other. Regardless, it is a big deal for EE to come. I may be out of town as well- but I wouldn't miss her.- Hey while you are here- would you mind looking at the weighted On Base Average article?

DM- I see why it erks you- I do. Just be patient with us...

The issue is that again... you're bringing politics into it. Sure, we can pit Wonkette against Malkin. But that wasn't the point of CS and it never was. You are turning this into a political conference when it isn't.

Ding Dong! I mentioned two hugely successgul bloggers- and their selfless promotion of other bloggers. They are political, but they know blogging and have a great rep for building communities. So no- I wasn't refering to their politics.

Believe me when I say that I'm pretty sure that you see my point way better than Marcus ever will. He doesn't see anything past politics (at least not on his blog he doesn't).

You write about Clemson football and (I think it's fantasy football, but not sure) and other stuff so I believe that you can understand where I come from.

Again, like I said above. You had a legitimate question. Ed answered it. Dr. Mary snowballed it. From there, all hell broke loose. I just hope that this doesn't dissuade other speakers from speaking later on. Either way, I hope that's understood because if I didn't have an ulcer before, I'm sure to have one now after this morning's readings.

I'm holding out for ya Chip. I really am.

Oh. just FYI. There's no way to bring Malkin, unless you or someone is willing to pay for the fees. She charges for speaking fees. I don't think anyone has tried Wonkette mainly because no one is tied to her.

First years of a conference are tough. We're pulling whatever strings we have. That's mainly the reasoning, regardless of the bloggers you find successful. It was by luck that I reeled in Scoble. A-listers are hard to come by. Period.

darkmoon wrote, "I'm all for new speakers next year, and if you want to provide conservative speakers to talk technology, I'm all for it."

We're already planning for next year. We've had inquiries from speakers who have heard about ConvergeSouth and would like to play. Because most of those inquiries come in to either Ed's or my email, we've been talking about people and ensuring that if one is on the left, then we have to be sure to get one equally 'famous' on the right to avoid any appearance of political pushing. This started happening 6 weeks ago, well before this blog discussion arose. Sometimes, it's the things you don't know that are the things you should know, so I'm sharing.

Further, because ConvergeSouth has become fairly well-known on a national scale, we are trying to bring others into the ConvergeSouth weekend, including artists (musical and others) to show off local talent. I'll be sure to check their voting affiliation before we listen to their music or hand their pictures. (Chip, that's borderline 'snerring,' in case you missed it.

Just like this year's conference grew past simply blogging, next year, we intend to grow into other forms of creativity online. The typed word is one medium. There are so many others and by next year, there will be more.

thanks sue- I'll ask Oscar- "the Gov" if he used the net & blogging effectively enough to speak. I doubt "the judge" can say anything pertinant- though he's interesting- he was the last Spec Prosecutor during the Clinton Admin (Reno), is good friends with Fitzgerald, and as a US ATTY- prosecuted a huge Hammas ring of smugglers in Charlotte.

Just remember, Chip, that the tagline is "creativity online for everyone." We're not inviting or excluding anyone based on genetic relationships. If the person has done creative stuff online, that's what we're interested in showcasing. It's that simple. And that complex.

This is pretty typical of your style, Chip. You link to comments that have nothing to do with the thread and commit knee jerk reactions to everything you see. You call yourself a Christian but spend your blogging time attacking the world. That hardly qualifies as Christian behavior and isn't condusive to building community.

There just happen to be a lot of Christians in the world who are not represented by the right wingers and I find them walking the talk far better than you've ever shown on your blog.

You bring politics into everything concerning local blogs even if it has nothing to do with local blogs, you rarely check your facts and you still haven't fixed that link to the "Plame Game." If you don't like the fact that the Blogsboro MeetUp is in-fact a majority of progressive thinkers then why not start your own conservative blog meetup? If the conservative among Blogsboro's membership want to join your ranks and leave us then so be it but they'll always be welcome at Blogsboro and can be a part of both groups unless YOU forbid them.

We've invested 4 years and hundreds of hours into what we've built, you're simply a Johnny-Come-Lately who's upset for whatever reason I don't know. Fact is: you don't know anything about Blogsboro or blogging ediquette and I doubt you're capable of seeing anything in an apolitical light.

Or would you just rather bitch?

Don't come; don't come. Nobody wants you there, so just don't come. OK? Okay. Problem solved. Quit whining. Next!

I have read a few times that long term bloggers seem to resent the newbies.

Do you desire a private country club for bloggers?...if so...get on with it so that us common folk can take over where you left off.

Is your goal to expand blogging?.... then stop with the stupid remarks as they are offensive and if your intent is to offend then lock those lips to the southbound side of the nortbbound mule.

The only one I see bitching is you?

On the other hand if your goal is expand blogging then how about giving the benefit of the doubt and educate and recognize that you speak to many.

thanks

Billy- i am kind of shocked at your words here. I love politics, I love Jesus- and you're right- there are alot of people walking closer with Him than me.

But here's where you are wrong. Being a Christian has nothing to do with competetion- you very ignorantly compared Christians as if there is a competition. Why bring up my faith at all? Are you a Christian?

Billy- I don't mind if most of you guys are liberal. You seem to resent that people disagree with liberals. But given your response here, why would I want to be around you? You obviously don't respect me.

I can answer that one! Me me!

Okay. The reason why people put Christian with conservative.

Most conservatives use Christianity as an anchor point for not only votes, but to justify what they do, even if they are immoral. That is: how many politicians bring up the topic of "how much of a Christian I am" and then you find have gone out and embezzled money from X fund?

Similarly, (and I know you won't dispute this fact, Chip) that many conservatives write about their tie to God and Jesus like they're trying to not prove to the reader that their faith is strong, but to prove to themselves. Strangely enough, those that in my opinion have strong faith don't really mention God and Jesus in their posts (Joel excluded since he's a pastor).

SO... with all that above (man, that's a huge thing to write), many liberals identity Christianity with conservatives.

Now with all that above as an explanation, that doesn't mean that there aren't liberals that are Christian, nor does it mean that liberals don't commit the same problem as above. But when it comes to politics, it slides in favor of liberals because they are a lot more open-minded than the conservative. It's both a strong and weak point just as the conservative is strong in belief structure but weak because they're too rigid.

I personally hate the fact that people draw people in with religion as a method. I think that's terribly dirty politics. If you say you can do something, don't tack on "God bless us" or any of that. It's dirty because while the politican could be a Christian, how much of it is religious, and how much of it is "vote getting"?

I find that very very bad since I expect the latter.

So in the end, Billy actually points out some good facts, but perhaps the attack (on being a Christian) is undeserved. But he does point out the fact that you do knee-jerk react to many things.

Well, at least you can't complain. Your blog is a lot more livelier than mine since I don't bother with politics. Mainly for the above reasons. :p

Oh, and the reason for Billy's negative post. It's because of the "Poison with invitation" post.

Basically, you're giving a few jabs here and there against a conference that is supposed to be apolitical (if it doesn't end up this way due to people trying to make it political this year, I'm going to be severely ticked off).

For anyone that has participated last year, or even organized the event, it's completely rude to make judgments without having participated. It's like if I started to talk bad things about your mother, even though I've never met her and wouldn't know if she was the sweetest woman in the world or a tremendous bi*!@ (as an example, so no offense there).

The fact is, many of the liberals, along with some that aren't so liberal are trying to point out to you and many times Marcus, that it's not always about the partisanship like you both like to do the rather insulting (passive aggressive) LGBCC tag. If you don't like it, the tag gets placed. Well, similarly in the same light things aren't always about politics. Or religion. Or my cause. Or yours.

A lot of the things that are being done are strictly for trying to make this community into something else. Truthfully, I really wouldn't mind seeing some Republicans using their "business skills" step up to the plate and help with driving more retail or other big business to GSO. Whether or not they do is beyond me, but as a young community leader, I don't see it happen.

I guess the opportunity is out there to cooperate between partisanships but people can't get over their differences and just work to make it better. In my opinion, that's what we can actually achieve as people in our own little spot in the world instead of bitching about this or that administration. Just as I dislike Bush for my own reasons, it's not like he's suddenly going to step down. Similarly, Clinton didn't when conservatives disliked him. Just an endless cycle of bureaucracy.

I think that we all need to cool it, and move the mountains we can move (such as building economics in GSO). In the end, that's where it benefits all of us the most regardless of other stupid things going on.

My last two cents since I'm sick of the thread. :p

Nah- I am as knee jerk as anyone- thats part of the game. The title had to do with all those who continue to say they care about building a community, but insult people at every turn.

At any rate- I do find your observations unique and challenging. As for Billy- he has done alot to promote the community- that is why I'm so surprized at his anger here.

Chip said, "...all those who continue to say they care about building a community, but insult people at every turn."

OK, make your argument then, Chip. Who specifically are you speaking of in the above sentence: Ed, Sue, and Darkmoon (the organizers of ConvergeSouth)? Why don't you cite some examples where they have insulted people. It shouldn't take you 30 seconds to find some examples, if as you say they do it "at every turn."

Looking forward to reading your response.

P.S. If these aren't the people you're speaking of, tell us who it is, specifically, that "insult people at every turn", and show us where they've done that, so we can all heap shame on them as a group.

What are the differences between conservative Christians and liberal Christians?
Perhaps our founding fathers intended for God to not be part of politics..hmmmm...check out below--- (maybe they did want God in politics)

Anyway, you may disagree but I felt like the following was tangent to the direction of this post.

After reviewing acknowledgments of God from all 50 state constitutions, one is faced with the prospect that maybe, the ACLU and the out-of-control federal courts are wrong! If you found this to be "Food for thought.." copy and send to as many as you think will be enlightened as I hope you were.

Please note that at no time is anyone told that they MUST worship God.

"Those people who will not be governed by God will be ruled by tyrants." - William Penn

"Every believer in Christ speaks for Him whether we use His name or not."

So, then Jesus would "bring hell with [him]?"

He would- he had a great sense of humor. Seriously, are you really offended by me quoting that line from Tombstone?

Anonymous- Ed was never part of it. Neither was DM. There's no need to repeat the list - because I listed the culprits in the original post.

Mebloggin- great point(s).

Billy- regarding the Plame story link in my post- "Crying Shame of Liberal..." - is now fixed. Thanks- I'd linked to the Slate article by Hitchens, but it obviously failed. here's the link which also links to Slate.
