IM 101 Via Malkin and Polinsky

Its really fun putting these 2 names in the same headline. Malkin has a great piece on Instant Messaging 101. Earlier today Sue answered some questions as well. Read here.

The stories around the Foley outing have been flying, it is a story only bloggers can unravel. I don't like the fact that so many in congress either behave badly or do nothing about those that do...

Comments:
In case you didn't know, you can also sniff out IM traffic through a network if it isn't encrypted just like you can with email.

That basically means that if you don't protect yourself, everything you send over IM (even without logging) can still be taken and recreated.

Chip,
About 4 years ago I was on the Board Of Directors of a children's non-profit when our CEO began communicating with kids-- and some board members-- in ways that we were very uncomfortable with so we notified the FBI. One of their first questions was if we used IM and had we saved our IMs. I didn't even know saving IMs were possible so obviously I'd not saved mine, but the FBI was able to find them anyway.

That said, I don't have a clue how it works but the FBI apparently does.

And if it means anything we were using Jabber IM at the time.
